Periodontal diseases are common
diseases that affect most people
to some degree. The most common
form is gingivitis or
inflammation of the gingiva (gum
tissues) around our teeth caused
by bacterial plaque. This
disease is estimated to affect
over 90% of the population.
Failure to treat this early
stage of disease can lead to
progression of the disease to
cause destruction of the
supporting bone and early loss
of your teeth. This second stage
of disease is called
periodontitis or often referred
to as pyorreha. Significant
evidence now exists to support
the idea that these chronic
inflammatory diseases can have
an effect on other systemic
health problems. Most notable is
the effect of the disease on
patients who have diabetes,
pregnant women who may have
premature or low-birth babies,
progression of heart disease and
even some degree of contributing
factors to respiratory diseases.
